ALA Unit 1 in DC Featured at ALA National Convention

WASHINGTON, DC—Nearly 2,000 women representing the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) convened in Houston, TX on Aug. 23-29 for the organization’s 93rd annual national convention. Auxiliary members from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia meet together with members of The American Legion and the Sons of The American Legion, to highlight the accomplishments of the 2012-2013 administrative year and set national priorities to guide their organizations in the coming year. The efforts of ALA Unit 1 in DC were highlight in several ways.

2012-2013 National Community Service Chairman Lisa Williamson (Alaska) chose Unit 1 as one of three success stories to share, and spoke about the commitment to service by collaborating with Wreaths Across America to assist in the clean-up efforts at Arlington National Cemetery, Points of Light’s project to stuff carekits for veterans, servicemembers and first responders and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 641 for their monthly washing of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Additionally, 2012-2013 National Membership Chairman Susan Britton (New York) mentioned our use of an e-newsletter as an example of keeping members, both near and far, and the community informed of our activities and successes.

The American Legion’s Economics Division asked a Unit 1 member to moderate their empowerment workshop’s Veteran Support Panel.

Unit 1 was featured in the Convention Guide as an example of the Auxiliary’s mission in action. Additionally, in a video highlighting an “everyday angel” Auxiliary member’s efforts to attract younger, new members, a picture of our officers at a recent Honor Flight was used in the slideshow of Auxiliary members.

Holding a distinct privilege, just over 20 percent of the on-site American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters staff at Convention are current Unit 1 members.

In the coming weeks, Unit 1 expects to receive a citation from the 2012-2013 National Public Relations Committee in recognition of the launch of our website.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1 in DC is one of 9,000 American Legion Auxiliary chapters in the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization. Unit 1, formally chartered in 2013, is committed to serving veterans, their families and the DC community.
